Perhaps this movie would be best represented in song, a remix of Julie Andrews’ “These are a Few of My Favorite Things.” You know the tune, so read along in a sing song-ish voice.

Vampires, werewolves and mystical creatures
Teen love and bromance in Hollywood features
Love triangles involving non-human beings
These are a few of my LEAST favorite things.

Overdrawn fight scenes and backflips galore
Poorly written lines won’t make you want more
“I am your father” we’ve already heard
Did I already mention the acting is absurd?

Girl finding out she’s a prodigy child
Nothing about the violence is mild
A movie that’s tailored directly for teens
The City of Bones isn’t far from Queens.

When the vampire bites
When the werewolf fights
When I’m feeling bored
That’s when I know I’ve been watching a show
Called the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

For Parents:
This movie contains several violent scenes and graphic images of demons in different forms. Teens are charged with the responsibility to kill the demons.
Profanity isn’t a huge ordeal with this one. Violence is real concern.
There are also themes of some men having interest in other men on a romantic level.

On another note:
If you have seen Twilight, I am Legend, Ferngully or Avatar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or Star Wars… Well, you’ve seen this movie. But all of those are better.

The Mortal Instruments serves up a healthy supply of dangerous beasties including vampires and werewolves, alongside the requisite teen love triangle. There's plenty of black leather and brooding going on, but not a single zombie because in this universe they simply don't exist - and yes, that got a big laugh from the audience. And speaking of laughs, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones does take itself - and the source material - very seriously, but also dishes out humor whenever possible (something that was lacking in Beautiful Creatures)... See Full Review

Given the inappropriate thematic territory into which this adaptation of the first in a series of bestsellers by Cassandra Clare strays, however -- not to mention a higher volume of mayhem than is usual for the genre -- many parents will find the film completely unsuitable for youngsters... See Full Review

This is a film geared to audiences not quite ready for The Hunger Games, and Bones won't test kids' nerves. At slightly over two hours, though, it will test parents' resolve to remain awake.

Credit Bones with putting female characters in first-rate action scenes. But even they can't overcome writing that occasionally borders on monstrous... See Full Review

Mortal Instruments is an action packed film geared toward the younger crowd... The first volume of Cassandra Clare’s popular YA The Mortal Instruments series has been respectfully brought to screen in another attempt to tap into the Harry Potter/Twilight/Hunger Games/Buffy audience. The problem is that fans of those series may find that too much of this story is derivative of themes, characters, and quests they have already seen... See Full Review

Of all the suitors to the “Twilight” crown, “The Mortal Instruments” series has the most potential to get the attention of the tweener crowd.
