Fantastic puppetry make this an excellent movie. this left an indelible mark on me as a child. I read the original book that this is based off, and that is even more amazing than this. As far as Childrens Fantasy of the 80s goes this is at the top of my list. The Child Actress in particular plays her role extremely well. She played a Child-empress that has lived for who knows how long, so she acts like an incredibly wise adult. Great performance. Too bad this was her only major role. Would have loved to follow her career. She became a modern dancer. There is some frightening imagery, and some violence in this. Good for young boys, but not so much for little ones.September 29th, 2011 · Details1 Thank ·
Parents need to know that while the overall message of this movie, which encourages children to become lovers of books, is a positive one, the scary adventures that take place in the film will scare very young children. The faceless "Nothing" sets out to destroy the land of Fantasia, and while the hero of the film has no weapons (at least until the story's end), he does engage in a bloody clash with one of the Nothing's emissaries. Other potentially upsetting incidents involve a steamrolling monster, bullies throwing a child into a dumpster, and a beloved horse being sucked into a swamp.
Although too intense for little children and too juvenile for older teens, The Neverending Story's message of using literature to explore real life issues coupled with a discussion about the balance between a growing imagination and keeping one's feet an the ground, could make this movie more than just the ultimate in escape fiction for 'tweens.
It's a beautiful story of a fantastic adventure. It might seem dated now, but it's a coming-of-age story any kid will enjoy.July 8th, 2014 · Details
